NOVEL is a discipline specific open repository. Eccles Library serves as publisher and provides opportunities for health professionals to publish non-traditional scholarly output which builds a neuro-ophthalmology curriculum. Needing continued support, spin off products were developed for licensing. An Illustrated Curriculum was published in Stat!Ref, a Teton Data Systems electronic platform. The revenue generated by the Stat!Ref product will help sustain the NOVEL open repository. The open NOVEL repository allows faculty around the world to share expertise and support training of neuro-ophthalmologists. The model established is transferrable and could be used by other disciplines. The Library-Society collaboration has been a rewarding way to enhance educational cooperation within the discipline of Neuro-ophthalmology. Libraries can be publishers of non-traditional content and manage peer-review. This role is a natural extension of the library profession and places the library in an essential position to further education and research in an academic discipline.
