Salt Lake County Library wanted to better understand the impact a free book program can have on reading frequency. Staff at the County Library’s Byington Reading Room put together an English and Spanish survey for parents of children receiving a free book.

  • Objective 3 An analysis of the 183 surveys received at the Byington Reading Room showed the more visits parents had made to the reading room to pick up a free book, the more these parents read to their children.

Using Focus Group Feedback: How the UVU Fulton Library Incorporated Feedback to Make Improvements and Reach More Students
In 2018 the UVU Fulton Library partnered with Institutional Research to run a Library Research Focus Group. They had 15 participants in two sessions. Students gave feedback on what was stressful about research, where they looked for help, and what barriers they experienced asking for help in the library. Using detailed qualitative data the Fulton Library addressed student concerns in instruction, wayfinding, and marketing reference services differently to tackle students’ needs.

Investigating Librarian Burnout and Creating Programs to Build Collegiality and Personal Resilience
Libraries are amazing resources for their communities, but are library employees experiencing burnout? Over the past three years, we investigated burnout levels of the Spencer S. Eccles Health Sciences Library employees. We created two interventions, the wellness game and Club Eccles, to build collegiality and personal resilience. This presentation will provide an overview of the burnout research field, our project, interventions, and next steps.

For many staff members, assessment can be an intimidating process. With anxieties about negative feedback, punishment, or toxic oversight, it can be difficult to have staff excited to participate. The assessment librarian at UVU’s Fulton Library will share how she brought assessment to the spotlight as opportunities to celebrate and then used that momentum to tackle more challenging topics in the library.

Collection Weeding: Breaking New Ground with Innovative Processes and Tools
Collection evaluation, or weeding, is about as popular as, well, real weeding. Unfortunately there isn’t a Library Roundup®-type technology that will make the job easy. BYU science librarians completed a major print collection evaluation project and will discuss essential library-wide collaborations, deselection criteria, innovative project management tools, a novel patron feedback process, and finally, lessons learned.
