Assessing the Value of E-Books Purchased through Demand-Driven Acquisitions

Libraries rely heavily on demand-driven acquisitions to purchase e-books that are of immediate value to their patrons. Library administrators, collection managers, and anyone involved in providing access to e-books should know how well their DDA program is meeting patron needs. This poster presents a brief analysis of four years of data on the USU Library’s DDA purchases, showing the insights that can be gathered on the quantity, cost, and use of DDA e-books across broad disciplinary categories.

More than We Know What to Do with: The Fulton Library and an Unusual Donation

In 2018, Fulton Library was offered an unusual donation: 63,000 books from the inventory of a closed bookstore. As this is approximately 1/3rd of the size of the regular collection at Fulton Library, several unique considerations had to be made. In this presentation, Anthony Morris, Kira Buswell, and Shay Chestnut will discuss our experience with accepting and processing this donation, describe the lessons we've learned, and talk about building mutually beneficial relationships with donors.

Collection Weeding: Breaking New Ground with Innovative Processes and Tools

Collection evaluation, or weeding, is about as popular as, well, real weeding. Unfortunately there isn’t a Library Roundup®-type technology that will make the job easy. BYU science librarians completed a major print collection evaluation project and will discuss essential library-wide collaborations, deselection criteria, innovative project management tools, a novel patron feedback process, and finally, lessons learned.

Dr. Irene Loewenfeld: Synthesizing and Disseminating 50 Years of Research on the Human Pupil

In 2005, the Eccles Health Sciences Library was gifted a research catalog belonging to the late Irene Loewenfeld, PhD. A prominent and respected researcher of the human eye, Dr. Loewenfeld edited and published the principal medical textbook on the pupil in 1993 after conducting over 50 years of research on the subject. We will present on Dr. Loewenfeld’s methodology for collecting, synthesizing and organizing her own research and the cultural significance of her achievements.

Beyond the Bestsellers: Case Studies in Building Inclusive Collections

Collection development outside of the packaged sets from vendors often seems daunting; how can libraries purchase to best serve diverse constituencies? This session will provide insight on how to expand the relevancy of your collection. Three panelists will share their experiences and strategies for assessing community needs and creating methods to ensure collections are “patron-driven.” The session will conclude with a conversation on failures, successes, challenges, and plans for the future.
