Leap into Science!

Leap into Science is a nationwide program that integrates open-ended science activities with children’s books, designed for children ages 3-10 and their families. We empower educators to offer programs in community settings like libraries, museums, and out-of-school time programs to engage underserved audiences in accessible and familiar settings. The State Library along with Utah STEM Action Center, Utah Afterschool Network and USU Extension Service applied for and was accepted as a state leadership team to participate in the National Network, Cohort 2. The Utah team is responsible for training informal educators, such as librarians, from rural and urban areas across the state. Our trainers come from the Afterschool Network, USU Extension and the STEM Action Center.

Legal Inclusion for All

Utah courts are flooded with legal filings from self-represented parties. The Utah Committee on Legal Inclusion (UCLI) is teaming up with the Utah State Library to educate librarians and provide a statewide marketing program designed to educate librarians in the state about use of the Online Court Assistance Program (OCAP). The goal is to increase citizens’ access to justice and to help self-represented persons. It is designed so that non-lawyers can prepare the necessary documents to file in Utah Courts. Additionally, by advertising your library as a resource for use of the OCAP forms, you can increase the relevance of your library in your community. UCLI’s goals of increasing access to justice and ensuring that all citizens of Utah have access to the courts is also achieved given that many marginalized populations use local libraries as their primary resource for information, internet and other valuable information.

Delivering the Library to Henefer

The Summit County Library received an LSTA Grant in 2018 to purchase a Remote Book Locker to place in the rural town of Henefer, Utah. Residents in Henefer can now collect and return their materials through the Locker instead of being required to travel 20 miles round-trip to the nearest Summit County Library Branch. This presentation will give an overview of the project, including how the partnership with Henefer was formed, details about the Locker, and lessons learned.

Library bike plus internet equals adventure! The Grand County Public Library recently implemented an exciting project to expand local access to the internet and library services. The project uses wifi hotspots, Chromebooks, and a wifi enabled book bike to connect with the community. This presentation will discuss how we identified community partners, began circulating the mobile devices, used bikes to connect with a wide audience, and fit the project into a busy public library schedule.
